The history book for St Albert, The Black Robe's Vision, points the city's namesake to Albertus Magnus, or St Albert the Great. However, an article from the St Albert Gazette argues that St Albert was named after a different Saint Albert, particularly Albert of Louvain, the cardinal-bishop of Liège.

When was Big Lake Settlement named St. Albert? Was it in 1861?
In the St Albert history book, The Black Robe's Vision, there is no clear separation between the St Albert Mission and Big Lake Settlement. In the book, there is a note that explains that the name Mista-Sakahikun is the "Cree name for Big Lake Settlement (St Albert)" [BRV 25].
