When was Big Lake Settlement named St. Albert? Was it in 1861?

In the St Albert history book, The Black Robe's Vision, there is no clear separation between the St Albert Mission and Big Lake Settlement. In the book, there is a note that explains that the name Mista-Sakahikun is the "Cree name for Big Lake Settlement (St Albert)" [BRV 25].

Please comment your views, and what you know on this subject. More information on the settlement of the first poeple in St Albert and how it was named can be found in this section from The Black Robe's Vision.

  1. I believe you're correct with the date. Before the Mission was established by Father Lacombe, there were already Aboriginals and Metis living in the area that was called the Big Lake Settlement. But, maybe Big Lake Settlement was the name of a larger area that included other settlements/missions like Lac Ste. Anne. I'm not sure of that.

  2. Truly it was in that year, the first to have claimed the land as St. Albert were a Father Albert Lacombe and Bishop Alexander Taché. They built a little chapel on top of the hill and so the town developed.
